Coming Soon to KIDCO!

After almost two years, we can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Many steps have been taken by our Executive Director, Nilsa M. Velazquez and our Head Start/ Early Head Start Director; Ivette Riano in securing everything that is needed to make two new sites a reality for our agency.

We are counting on starting the new School Year 2012-2013 with two new sites, KIDCO V, located at 5510 NE 2nd Avenue, for 80 Head Start children; and KIDCO VI, 242 NE 26th Street, for 32 Early Head Start children. We are excited that we will be able to meet the guidelines mandated by our Grantee and serve the children and families who count on our quality services. We will share the opening date soon.

Recent Events at KIDCO

On November 15, 2011 KIDCO children 2 and older began taking Yoga classes. We are excited to offer this new component to our curriculum. Children need to learn to find balance in their lives. We feel that teaching Yoga to children will help them develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility and coordination. These skills will benefit them beyond the classroom. We have contracted Jill Rapperport who is an experienced and professional Yoga Instructor.

One of KIDCO’s main events is the Christmas toy drive. This year, City of Miami Commissioner Sarnoff honored us with his presence. He took time to read a story to our children. Santa Claus also visited all centers and gave each child a toy.

Miami Children's Museum

On March 5, 2012 our KIDCO II children visited the Miami Children's Museum. This is always a special fun day highlighted by the many choices in experiences the museum has to offer. As you can tell by the picture it is a packed day for dress up, pretend and creativity!

In Memoriam Dr. Alicia Baro

Dr. Alicia S. Baro, icon in the Puerto Rican community and movement, passed away on January 2, 2012. We are proud to say that for the past 20 years she was a mentor and an active KIDCO Board of Trustee.

She was born in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, and raised in New York City. After relocating to Miami, she actively opposed the deplorable treatment of migrant workers in Miami, which sparked her participation and led to the formation of various Puerto Rican organizations.

Alicia dedicated her life to advocating for the rights of Hispanics and other ethnic minorities; for women, and issues related to politics, education and employment. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including Distinguished Service Awards from the 18th District of the Florida Congressional Delegation and the City of Miami. Alicia was featured in Julia's Daughters, a book highlighting historical Dade County women. In 1995 NACOPRW instituted the Annual Alicia Bar Achievement Award.

In Memoriam Bienvenida Martinez

On February 14, 2012 our beloved Executive Director, Nilsa M. Velazquez, alongside her three sisters, Aida, Bennie and Olga said goodbye to their mother "Nina". Bienvenida was a highly spiritual and motivated woman who literally enjoyed every second she spent in this world.

Her KIDCO family will certainly miss her for her sense of humor and loving smile but more importantly for her zest for learning and doing the right thing.

We will always love you "Abuelita Nina".
